Matte Floor Tiles: What Matte Finish Means, Where It Works, and Which Tile to Choose

Loading designs...

Matte floor tiles have a surface that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. The tile face has very low sheen  -  sometimes none at all. Where a polished or glossy tile mirrors the room back at you, a matte floor tile shows its colour and texture without any bright surface reflection. This is why matte tile flooring reads as more grounded, more natural, and more material-like than a polished floor. It is also why matte is the correct finish for bathroom floors, shower floors, kitchen floors, and outdoor surfaces in India  -  all places where a wet floor and a glossy finish create a slip hazard.

Matte floor tiles in India are available in GVT (Glazed Vitrified Tiles), porcelain, and ceramic. Each tile body has different water absorption and suits different surfaces. The matte finish is what they share. Within matte, there are also sub-finishes: plain matte, GHR (Glaze High Resistance), sugar finish, and matte carving  -  each giving a different surface texture and grip level. Understanding these distinctions is what makes the difference between a matte tile that works well and one that still feels slippery when wet.

This page covers what matte floor tiles are, how they compare with glossy and other finishes, and which matte specification is correct for each room and surface in an Indian home.

Matte Floor Tiles vs Glossy and Other Finishes: The Practical Difference

The finish of a floor tile affects three things that matter in daily use: slip resistance when wet, how visible dust and footprints are, and how easy the surface is to clean. The comparison below covers all Indian tile finishes against these three criteria.

FinishAnti-Skid When WetDust and Footprint VisibilityCleaning EffortSafe on Wet FloorsBest Rooms

Important: Satin matte tiles must not be confused with true matte tiles. Despite the name, satin matte has a semi-reflective surface that becomes slippery when wet. Only tiles labelled plain matte, GHR, sugar, or matte carving are safe on wet bathroom, kitchen, and outdoor floors.

Matte Porcelain Tile Flooring: What It Is and Where It Works

Matte porcelain tile flooring uses a porcelain body with a matte finish. Porcelain tiles have 2% to 5% water absorption, which is lower than ceramic (12% to 16%) but higher than GVT (0.05%). In matte finish, porcelain tiles are safe on indoor floors, including bathrooms and kitchens, and on covered outdoor surfaces with limited rain exposure.

Matte porcelain floor tiles are specified most often for:

  • Indoor living rooms and bedrooms where a slightly textured, natural stone-like surface is wanted without the cost or maintenance of natural stone.
  • Bathroom floors in matte finish where GVT is not available in the specific colour or design required. Matte porcelain at 2% to 5% water absorption is acceptable for bathroom floors, though GVT at 0.05% is the safer long-term specification.
  • Light outdoor use on covered verandahs and patios with limited direct rain exposure. For fully exposed outdoor monsoon surfaces, GVT matte or GHR at 0.05% water absorption is the stronger specification.

Matte porcelain floor tiles in large formats (600x600mm and above) give a clean, minimal floor that reads as contemporary and refined. The matte surface in large format shows no grout lines, no reflection, and no surface activity  -  just the colour and subtle texture of the tile itself.

Porcelain tiles in matte finish across all sizes and colours are listed under porcelain tiles on Tilesfinders, with water absorption figures and IS compliance data on every product.

Matte Floor Tiles for Bathroom and Shower: Why Matte Is the Only Correct Finish

Matte bathroom floor tiles are not a stylistic preference  -  they are a safety requirement. A wet bathroom floor needs grip. Any glossy, polished, satin matte, or semi-polished tile on a bathroom floor creates a slip hazard from the first shower. Matte finish GVT in 300x300mm (1x1) is the standard specification for bathroom and shower floors across India because it combines anti-skid grip with 0.05% water absorption and IS 15622:2006 compliance.

Matte Shower Floor Tile

A matte shower floor tile has to handle the most concentrated water exposure of any floor surface in a home. Direct shower spray, soap, and shampoo residue all reach the shower floor surface simultaneously. In these conditions, GVT matte in 300x300mm (1x1) or a matte hexagon mosaic in 50mm to 100mm gives the best combination of anti-skid grip (from the matte surface) and water resistance (from 0.05% water absorption). The many grout joints in a mosaic format add additional grip and friction on a shower floor. Use white epoxy grout on shower floor matte tiles  -  epoxy grout resists soap and shampoo residue and does not grow mould at the grout joints in wet shower conditions, the way cement grout does.

GHR finish on a shower floor gives even higher grip than plain matte. The stone-like surface texture of GHR means the tile face itself has micro-level surface variation that holds grip when soap-wet. For a shower floor in a large bathroom where the shower tray has a significant slope toward the drain, GHR is the correct specification. For a standard shower floor with adequate slope in a compact bathroom, plain matte GVT in 1x1 is sufficient.

The full guide to bathroom tiles  -  covering floor and wall finish rules, size guides for compact and large bathrooms, and IS 15622:2006 compliance data  -  covers every surface in a bathroom, not only the floor.

Matte Bathroom Floor Tile vs Matte Bathroom Wall Tile

Matte tiles work on both bathroom floors and bathroom walls, but the specification differs. For bathroom floors, matte GVT in 300x300mm or 600x600mm is standard. For bathroom walls, matte is one of several safe finish options  -  PGVT polished glossy is also safe on walls and gives a better light reflection. Many Indian bathrooms use matte floor tiles with polished glossy wall tiles in the same colour or the same marble design. The matte floor provides grip. The polished wall reflects the bathroom lighting and makes the space feel larger.

Matte White Floor Tile: The Most Used Matte Colour in India

Matte white floor tiles are the most specified matte floor tile in Indian bathrooms and living rooms. White in matte finish gives a clean, minimal floor that reads as contemporary without the glare and footprint visibility of a glossy white tile. A matte white bathroom floor in 600x600mm GVT pairs naturally with any wall tile colour  -  the neutral white recedes and lets the wall colour define the bathroom.

The practical advantage of matte white over glossy white on an Indian home floor is significant. Glossy white floors show every footprint, water mark, and dust particle as a visible smear. Matte white distributes light evenly across its surface and conceals the texture of daily foot traffic far more effectively. In a household with children, pets, or heavy foot traffic, a matte white floor stays presentable between mopping sessions, whereas a glossy white floor looks dirty within hours.

Matte white floor tiles in GVT in 600x600mm (2x2) or 800x800mm start at Rs. 65 to Rs. 130/sq.ft from manufacturers across Morbi, Gujarat, and are listed under IS 15622:2006 compliance for all indoor and wet area floor applications.

White tiles in matte, glossy, and polished finishes across all sizes and categories are listed under white tiles on Tilesfinders, covering floor and wall options for bathrooms, kitchens, and living rooms.

Matte Grey Floor Tile: The Standard for Outdoor and Contemporary Indoor Floors

Matte grey floor tiles are the most used matte specification for outdoor parking floors, contemporary living room floors, and large-format bedroom floors in India. Grey in matte finish gives a concrete-like, industrial quality that reads as sophisticated and low-maintenance. The matte surface hides dust, tyre marks, and foot traffic well  -  grey is a forgiving colour and matte is a forgiving finish, which makes their combination one of the most practical floor tile choices across all rooms and surfaces.

Matte grey floor tiles in GVT or full body vitrified in 600x600mm (2x2) or 600x1200mm (2x4) are specified for large open-plan living rooms and entrance halls in contemporary Indian homes. The 2x4 large format in matte grey with matching grey epoxy grout gives a floor that reads as a poured concrete slab from across the room.

For outdoor use, matte grey GVT in 400x400mm (16x16) or 500x500mm (20x20) with GHR finish is the most specified parking and courtyard floor tile across new Indian residential construction. IS 15622:2006 compliance and 0.05% water absorption make it safe for monsoon-exposed outdoor surfaces.

Grey tiles in matte, GHR, and textured finishes for outdoor, living room, and bathroom floors are listed under grey tiles on Tilesfinders by size, category, and IS compliance.

Matte Ceramic Floor Tile: Where It Works and Where GVT Is Better

Matte ceramic floor tiles have 12% to 16% water absorption (IS 13630). In matte finish, they are anti-skid. The finish is correct. The water absorption is the limiting factor. On a dry indoor living room or bedroom floor with no water exposure, matte ceramic floor tiles in 300x300mm are an acceptable and cost-effective specification at Rs. 30 to Rs. 65/sq.ft.

For any floor that gets wet  -  bathroom floors, kitchen floors, outdoor floors  -  GVT matte with 0.05% water absorption (IS 15622:2006) is the correct specification over matte ceramic. The water absorption difference matters in Indian monsoon conditions and in bathrooms where the tile body absorbs moisture daily. Over time, ceramic tile bodies with high water absorption develop micro-cracks as they repeatedly expand and contract with wetting and drying.

Matte Tile Flooring: Room by Room Guide

Living Room Matte Floor Tiles

In a living room, matte tile flooring gives a grounded, contemporary result that holds its look between cleaning sessions. Glossy living room floors show every footprint and chair scuff. Matte living room floors conceal daily traffic. GVT matte or porcelain matte in 600x600mm (2x2), 600x1200mm (2x4), or 800x800mm gives the large-format floor that contemporary Indian living room design calls for. Colours in grey, beige, off-white, and concrete-look are the most specified for Indian living rooms in matte finish.

The full specification for living room tiles  -  covering matte, glossy, and polished finish options, size guide for standard and open-plan rooms, and category comparison  -  covers all floor and wall options for living rooms.

Bedroom Matte Floor Tiles

Matte tiles in a bedroom give a calm, quiet floor surface. The absence of reflection from a matte floor reads as restful and undemanding  -  appropriate for a sleeping space. GVT matte in 600x600mm or 800x800mm in warm grey, beige, or warm white is the most specified matte bedroom floor tile in Indian residential projects. The large format in matte gives the bedroom a hotel-suite quality without the maintenance demand of a polished floor.

Outdoor Matte Floor Tiles

Outdoor floors in India  -  parking areas, courtyards, verandahs, terraces  -  all require matte or GHR finish. No glossy or polished tile is safe on an outdoor floor that gets wet. GVT matte or GHR in 400x400mm (16x16) to 600x600mm (2x2) in grey, beige, or stone-look tones gives outdoor floors the correct anti-skid grip and the 0.05% water absorption required for Indian monsoon conditions. IS 15622:2006 compliance confirms outdoor-grade specification.

Outdoor matte and GHR floor tiles for parking areas, terraces, and courtyards are listed under outdoor tiles on Tilesfinders with anti-skid finish data and outdoor water absorption ratings on every product.

FAQs

Matte floor tiles have a low-sheen or no-sheen surface finish that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. The tile face shows colour and texture without surface glare. In India, matte floor tiles are available in GVT (IS 15622:2006, 0.05% water absorption), porcelain (2% to 5%), and ceramic (IS 13630, 12% to 16%). Matte GVT is the correct specification for wet floors, outdoor floors, and bathroom floors.

Yes. Matte finish tiles are anti-skid when wet. GHR (Glaze High Resistance) gives an even higher grip level than plain matte and is the correct finish for sloped surfaces, shower floors, and outdoor floors. Satin matte tiles are not the same as matte  -  despite the name, satin matte has a semi-reflective surface that is slippery when wet and must not be used on any wet floor.

Matte porcelain tiles have 2% to 5% water absorption. Matte GVT tiles have 0.05% water absorption and IS 15622:2006 compliance. Both are anti-skid in matte finish. For bathroom floors, shower floors, and outdoor monsoon-exposed surfaces, GVT matte at 0.05% absorption is the safer long-term specification. For dry indoor floors and covered outdoor use, matte porcelain is an acceptable alternative at a comparable price.

GVT matte in 300x300mm (1x1) is the standard specification for Indian bathroom floors. For shower floors specifically, GHR finish in 300x300mm gives the highest grip. Matte ceramic in 300x300mm is acceptable for a dry bathroom floor with low traffic. Sizes above 300x300mm in ceramic must not be used on bathroom floors. All bathroom floor tiles must carry IS 15622:2006 (GVT) or IS 13630 (ceramic 1x1) compliance.

Yes. GVT matte or porcelain matte in 600x600mm or 600x1200mm is widely specified for Indian living room floors. Matte conceals footprints and dust better than glossy. The large format in matte gives a contemporary, hotel-quality floor. Sugar finish is a popular alternative  -  it has a subtle sparkle on a matte base that adds visual interest without the slip risk of a glossy surface.

Matte ceramic floor tiles (300x300mm): Rs. 30 to Rs. 65/sq.ft. GVT matte floor tiles (600x600mm): Rs. 65 to Rs. 130/sq.ft. GHR GVT outdoor floor tiles (400x400mm): Rs. 60 to Rs. 120/sq.ft. Matte porcelain floor tiles: Rs. 55 to Rs. 130/sq.ft. Sugar finish GVT (600x600mm): Rs. 70 to Rs. 150/sq.ft. All prices are from manufacturers in Morbi, Gujarat and vary by brand and design.

Sweep or dry mop daily to remove dust and grit. Wet mop weekly with a pH-neutral floor cleaner. Avoid acidic cleaners such as vinegar-based products  -  they can dull the matte surface of GVT tiles over time. Matte tiles do not need buffing or polishing. No sealing is required for GVT matte tiles at any point. For outdoor matte GVT tiles, a pressure hose rinse removes surface deposits without any cleaning chemical required.
